hello!

i was driving today and seats did not work. tried several times. in the afternoon I went down to do some measuremets and to my surprise, when I was testing passenger seat, it started heating!

i took measures of heating module connectors (car on idle):

posted image

SITUATION 0 - heating OFF

pin 4 - ground, 0v
pin 5 - power from GEM, 14v
pin 6 - from heater switch, 0v
pin 7 - power from module to the heating mats, 0v

SITUATION 1 - heating ON (position "5"), seats DO NOT HEAT

pin 4 - 13,9v
pin 5 - 14v
pin 6 - 13,9v
pin 7 - 13,9v

SITUATION 2 - heating ON (position "5"), seats ARE HEATING

pin 4 - about 1-2v, i dont remember exactly, for sure a lot less than 13v
pin 5 - 12,5v
pin 6 - about 8-9v (when changed to position "1" - about 4v, "2" - about 5v, "3" - about 6v, "4" - about 7v). on every position the voltage fluctuates about 1v, is it termistor working?
pin 7 - 12,5v

when passenger seat started working while I was measuring, I turned on drivers seat heating - nothing happened. after finishing with passenger seat i switched to drivers seat, and it also started working when I was doing the measurements. I tried switching the car on/off and switching seats and sometimes seats worked right away, sometimes it took them some time (like 2-3 minutes) to switch from SITUATION 1 to SITUATION 2 (but I dont know what triggered the change!!) and sometimes they WOULD NOT change from SITUATION 1 to SITUATION 2 at all. as long as they were in SITUATION 2 they were working fine, I could lower the temperature, and then make it higher again. but after turning heating off, they might not work again. both seats behave the same exact way.

im not an electrician, so I have no bloody idea whats going on. thinking reasonably I would say - termistors in seats are bad (more likely), or heating modules are bad (less likely).

what do you think?

hello!

I have a problem with heated seats, that probably nobody in polish forums seen before. So I decided to ask you guys for help.

first of all sorry im writing in english, but I cant speak russian, unfortunately . I would really love to, cause this forum is awesome and helped me alot already.

I have a 2004 focus mk2. it did not have heated seats out of the factory, but it has all of the wiring needed (weird version from the beggining of the production, its not ghia but it has ghia wiring). so i bought the switch panel and heated seats. seats are pretty new, from 2011 focus mk2fl, only 30 000km on them.

all fuses in GEM (86 and 70 - pre-FL gem) are OK, switch has power, pin 5 in switch is connected to pin 17 in green seat connector, seats have power from GEM. after turning on the heating there is 12v on the 17 pin in the seat connector. everything seemed just fine. but after instaling the seats - nothing.

I rode for a week and tried turning the heated seats on and off occasionally, and after few days I noticed that driver seat sometimes work (but really only sometimes, like one in 10 tries) when put to "5" position. then, after my ass got burned and I changed to anything less than "5", it would stop working at all, and would not start again. ocassionaly, after some time, it would start working again, bur not every time. very weird. it happens very random, i cant find any connection to engine RPM, other electric equipment, temperature, anything. just random. mostly does not work, but sometime does.

on the other hand I never noticed passenger seat working. it may be because i tried turning it on a lot less times than driver seat, but still - it never worked for me. I took it off and checked the heating pads by checking the circuit between pin 10 in the blue seat connector (ground) and YB (yellow-black) pin coming from the heating module under the seat - the circuit was ok, so the heating mats seem to be good.

so something strange is going on. on the passenger side - it may be heating module failure. is there any way to check if its broken? tomorrow I will do some tests of the module with electric multimeter and post it in the table.

on the driver side - i totally dont know whats going on.

any ideas guys?
thank You

by the way - how do I insert images to the post?
